Sweat and Consequences

May 24, 2014

As sweating is one of my main talents, I do suffer consequences. First, I think that I actually feel hotter, as I am sweating way more than will ever evaporate & cool me down in the sultry, humid tropics. Second, I have to be really careful about getting dehydrated. I do make an effort to drink adequate amounts of water, often while wishing for ice cubes. Third, I get sunburned. There are two related routes to the sunburn. I can sweat off most sunscreens. And most of the really tough, water-resistant sunscreens also make me feel more hot and sticky, so I either sweat more, or more seriously, I talk myself out of putting on the sunscreen. I did find a brand that is not quite so thick & hot, but this brand stains my clothes. Don’t I sound like a whiney toddler? Of course, beyond the temporary discomfort of sunburn is the ongoing skin damage. I do have areas of my skin that I watch closely, Yesterday, the doctor here at Ukarumpa spot froze a couple of suspicious spots. These two spots join a handful of other spots that have been zapped, and one spot sent off for biopsy. So far, no real worry, but I really should convince myself to do better at sunscreen & hats, as well as to just keep on monitoring my skin. How did the great granddaughter of Snow White end up in the tropics?!

Today I continue working through heaps of laundry: sheets & towels for 5 people, kitchen linens, as well as the last few days of my own clothes. I am so enjoying my automatic washer! I can do all of my laundry by hand in the village, or ask a lady in the village to help me, but what fun to put the soap & clothes in the machine, then just listen to the water go in & out and the machine do the work, including spin dry. When was the last time you wrung out by hand sheets or bath towels from sopping wet?
This evening is my second birthday dinner. Gotta love a birthday that lasts for several days!

Hi Beverly. I just came across last months Gospel Lighthouse missions newsletter and read about the lightning that hit your windmill generator. I sure hope that has been fixed and things are working again. I read your blog(it is so interesting) and i so appreciate the work you are doing. Really felt led to pray for you tonight. God bless you Beverly and keep you safe, strong, healthy and send you cool breezes.Thank you again. In Jesus…Carole Russell
