Why is the sun shining in the ‘Middle of the Night?’

June 22, 2015

And other strange perceptions during jet lag. Or where am I? What time is it really?

Early morning until early afternoon in Texas is the deep of the night in Papua New Guinea. And the deep of the night here in Texas is the evening time in PNG. So, the week or so that I have been back in Texas, I wake up in the middle of the night, as during my 4 week stay, I adjust enough to PNG time, that my inner clock thinks that is the optimal time to be awake! Then just as I should really be getting up, that is when my body wants to fall back asleep, in spite of the fact that the sun has arisen on Texas and is shining. (Well, there have been those cloudy, rainy mornings ~ Oh, really want to stay in bed.)

I arrived back in Texas on Friday afternoon. That first Sunday (14th June), I did not try to head to church. This was partly based on my return home just a few years ago. I had also arrived home on Friday & went to church Sunday morning. I was sitting in church and saying to myself, “It is not 3 a.m. in the morning; It is not 3 a.m. in the morning. . . . “ Then suddenly, the lights went very dim for praise & worship. I sat there stunned. Really, when did this kind of thing start? Did no one care that I was there in the middle of my night?!

Another thing that happens is called ‘brain fog.’ This means that I try to think, but it does not always really come out how I thought my thoughts would be expressed. Or sometimes, there are just no thoughts at all. (One reason why this blog entry was not posted earlier.)

As my time in Papua New Guinea was very intense, and I tried to do way too much, I also came home quite exhausted, physically & mentally. This combined with plain ole jet lag was not a pretty picture. I am still working to catch up with myself. I thought jet lag was almost over, then I was awake last night for 2 hours. Sigh. Everything is out of my suitcases, but they are just standing by the back door. I am waiting for them to go and put themselves onto the shelf in the shed where they belong. I am not sure what their problem is. : ) I am almost caught up on laundry. I did pull a muscle, that is not helping me catch up on the needed work. Later this week, when the brain is working a bit better, I will report on my time & work in PNG.

Hoping that this version posts on Facebook!
